1-Week Writing Retreat
Mount Vernon, West County Clare
Dates in April TBC
Sometimes it does your soul good to go on a Writer’s Retreat, emerging yourself in nature and giving yourself the time and space to simply think and write.
Join us on this exclusive retreat at Mount Vernon, a beautiful victorian house with walled garden, situated on the Flaggy Shore in The Burren, overlooking Galway Bay. Once home to the founder of the Abbey Theatre and writer Lady Gregory and often visited by writers JM Synge and WB Yeats, the house is filled with books and antique furniture, with unique fireplaces built by artist Oliver St. Gogerty.
There are four beautiful large bedrooms with king-size beds and en-suite bathrooms with baths. There are also tables to write at. Two rooms have a terrace out onto the walled garden and two rooms, on the first floor, enjoy magnificent views of the sea. Large, fluffy towels are provided. There is a large kitchen, a cosy sitting room with an honesty bar, and a separate dining room where you can write and also take part in optional writing exercise sessions, held twice daily.
A short walk away along the Flaggy Shore is the Russell Gallery book and coffee shop, and Linane’s Pub which serves wonderful, fresh fish and creamy pints of Guinness.
If you need an inspired break from your writing, a half-day excursion to the nearby legendary Cliffs of Moher, a boat trip to the Aran Islands or a visit to the nearby market town of Kinvara, can all be arranged.
If arriving from abroad, writers can be collected from Dublin or Shannon airport and driven to Mount Vernon, stopping to shop for groceries on the way.
As this is a self-catering retreat, it is common for writers to end up cooking with and for each other in the large and comfortable kitchen, where there is usually plenty of craic! In the evenings the sitting-room fire is lit, and writers can gather round to chat and share stories, and perhaps some writing as well.
Prices are on a self-catering basis and includes transport and accommodation. Fluffy towels are provided. Trips and excursions are not included.
